The Waratahs Hockey Club
A Brief History
Founded in 1984, Waratahs Hockey Club is a vibrant, family-friendly community with over 120 members. We pride ourselves on offering a welcoming atmosphere and excellent development programs for both juniors and seniors, making it an ideal place for new members, young and old, to join.
The name “Waratahs” was chosen to reflect our NSW roots, and our team has proudly worn the NSW two Blue colours since inception. The club was initially formed to create a hockey team of NSW-based players for the Sunraysia District Women’s Hockey Association, and over the years, it has grown to include a diverse group of individuals who share a passion for the sport.
In 1993, Waratahs considered affiliating with the Wentworth District Football Club, sharing the Dareton oval for training. By 1994, junior teams aligned with clubs rather than playing separately, and we entered our first men’s team in the newly formed Sunraysia Hockey Association Men’s Competition. The community spirit is strong within our club, as we support and encourage each other both on and off the field, fostering a sense of belonging.
The opening of the Sunraysia Hockey Association (SHA) Turf Facilities in 2007 marked a significant milestone for the club. This allowed all senior games and some junior games to be played on turf, enhancing the playing experience for our members. We believe that the most memorable moments in sports are those filled with laughter, friendship, and the sheer joy of playing, and we strive to create such moments within our club.
